Kriya Yoga is an ancient system, the origin of which goes back to the age of Mahabharat. It is a well known fact that Lord Krishna himself refers to the science of Kriya Yoga in Bhagavat Gita. The ancient practice of Kriya Yoga which was lost in due course of time was revived once again in the modern world, by Lahiri Mahasaya (Yogiraj Shyama Charan Lahiri) who is a direct disciple of Sri Sri Mahavatar Babaji. Kriya Yoga as taught by Lahiri Mahasaya is strictly learnt through Guru-Disciple tradition with the secrecy of the process being well maintained. Lahiri Mahayasaya (Yogiraj Shyama Charan Lahiri) initiated Sri Tinkori Lahiri, Sri Yukteshwar Giri, Sri Panchanon Bhattacharya, Swami Pranabananda, Swami Kebalananda, Swami Keshabananda, Bhupendranath Sanyal into Kriya Yoga and many other people, who were truly interested in spiritual upliftment. It is through the instrumentality of Lahiri Mahasaya that ancient Kriya Yoga was revived once again in 19th century. In olden days, there were only very few people who knew about Kriya Yoga. The Kriyavans(one who practices Kriya) even when they lived among common men, maintained the secrecy of the sacred process and the practices so well that even their close friends/relatives would not know that they are kriyavans. Infact, as given by Swami Yoganandha in his “Autobiography of a Yogi”, he himself was not aware that his Guru Sri Yukteshwar Giri was a Kriya Yogi when he met him first. He came to know about it when he saw Lahiri Mahasaya’s picture in Sri Yukteshwar Giri’s room. This ancient practice was brought to limelight throughout the world by Paramahansa Yogananda through his book “Autobiography of a Yogi”. Kriya Yoga is the science of breath control through which the kriyavan can control the life force energy (prana) and stay in the “BEING” (detached completely from mind) state all the time. In such a state, he lives as per the universal command and is not attached with any karma. Surely, Kriya Yoga is a shortcut path to the ultimate goal. And as mentioned by Swami Yoganandha, it works like mathematics. So, it cannot fail. Click here to read more about the Science of Kriya Yoga to know how it works! The path of Maha Siddha Yoga! There are 3 kinds of spiritual path: 1. Path of Knowledge (Gyan Yog) – The one who follows this path has no desire. He believes that every action is a source of sadness and hence drops all action and knows only god. 2. Path of Action (Karm Yog) – This path is for those who cannot drop action and want to live a life of fulfillment and want to attain self-realization also. 3. Path of Devotion (Bhakti Yog) – This path is for those who are neutral. They are neither attached to the world nor can they practice renunciation of the world. This path emphasizes on devotion to god. The world is ephemeral. Mentally renounce the fruit of your action. It will lead you to the longing for god which is the nature of Bhakti Yoga. It will lead to self-realization. You cannot renounce action so continue to do the action till such time you attain total detachment from worldly affairs (Vairagya – Dispassion). Do Karm Yog till you get detached and it converts to Gyan Yog. Do not renounce Activity (Karma). Nothing is permanent. Virtuous act leads you to higher worlds. Even if you do good deeds which takes you to higher realms. Higher realms are meant only for enjoying the fruit of your good deeds on earth. Even if you attain the heavenly realms you have to come back to earthly realms to get the human body which is a vehicle for sadhna for attaining final release. Everyone who lives in higher realms desires human body because self-realization is attained only through this body by following the three spiritual paths. Even if you have the body of divine/celestial beings one cannot be liberated. Desire for liberation is ok but only thru Yoga, Bhakti or Gyan. Human body is a fit instrument for spiritual effort and to get release. Put human body in the proper practice of sadhna. Don’t miss this rare opportunity of human body. Human body is like a boat to cross the ocean of delusion. The boat will only move with favorable wind and that favorable wind and boat is rowed by the Guru. Sadhna is the favorable wind that the Guru gives you to sail. So people for their benefits should follow the path of either Ashtang Yog which includes the below: Yama/moral codes Niyama/self-purification and spiritual study Asana/posture Pranayama/breath control Pratyahara/sense control Dharana/intention Dhyana/meditation Samadhi/Contemplation leading to withdrawal of life force from the body. OR of Gyan Yog which is the path of intellectual discrimination. You know that the world is false and GOD is the only truth OR follow Bhakti Yog in which you can assume God in a form and pray with great devotion. It is difficult to control the mind. However mind can be controlled without fighting of the mind. Do not make the wavering of the mind a problem. By doing pranayama mind can come easily under control. This is the way to deal with the wavering mind. Never fight with it. You can choose the path that appeals to you and follow it. Path of Bhakti yog by having devotion and belief in god. Even though attracted by the world, goes through the experience by being detached knowing that it is temporary and the real enjoyment is self-realization. In this path although one is unable to give up their actions but have faith in god. Or by following the path of Gyan Yog in which one sees god in everything. They have love in their heart and love everything because they see god in it. Or by following the path of Karm yog and continue to do the actions (Karm) without expectation. Drop expectation!! Do your duty without desiring the fruit thereof. There are four types of human 1. Above Average – They know the world is illusionary and renounce desire and reject the world. They follow yoga and become yogis. 2. Average– They neither accept nor can they reject the world. They follow the path of devotion and worship devotedly and attain god. They are prayful. 3. Regular– They want to enjoy the world and are compassionate by serving god in others. 4. Below Average – They don’t believe in right or wrong. They only care about themselves regardless of the action. The people in this category come back again and again and don’t get released from the cycle of life and death. When their actions (karma) are exhausted they die and then depending on their good or bad deeds they come back again. All these paths will happen automatically in your sadhana when you follow the path of MahaYoga (physical discipline of Shaktipath meditation) after being initiated into Shaktipath meditation. Science of Kriya Yoga Kriya Yoga is an ancient yogic practice based on body, mind and prana involving pranayamam and subtle visualization. The word Kriya came from its Sanskrit root “Kri” which means “doing” or “action”. Yoga means “union”. Kriya Yoga is a yoga through which the union with the Infinite by performing or doing some specific action or rite. It was discovered by the ancient yogis that through breath control, the life force energy (prana) can be controlled and through this, the spiritual evolutionary process can be shortened by considerable amount of time. A Kriya Yogi can remain in a breathless state for hours together. In contradiction to forceful holding of breath, a Kriya yogi can hold his breath without any effort. It is his natural state of being and through this breath mastery, he is able to detach himself completely with mind and be in union with Infinite all the time. Such a Kriyaban (also known as Kriyavan) acts solely based on universal command and hence, is detached with any karmic burden associated with his actions. His spiritual evolution sky rockets in a very little time. The Kriya yogi lives in union with Atman all the time and is freed from egocentric living. He lives in higher spiritual plane and experiences bliss all the time. The process of Kriya Yoga initiation from Guru and the practice are respected with spiritual sacredness and are maintained secret. The initiation given by the Guru is the essence of Kriya Yoga without which the practice is not complete. Kriya Yoga as taught by Lahiri Mahasaya (Yogiraj Shyama Charan Lahiri) followed a strict Guru-Disciple relationship. Click here to read about the importance of Guru in Kriya Yoga. The practice has to be learnt through an authorized Kriya Yoga Gurus only. A person can become a Guru and initiate other people into Kriya Yoga only after getting consent from his Guru. With regular and ardent practice of Kriya and Guru’s blessings, a Kriya yogi can reach the ultimate goal even in a single life time or even within few decades or even lesser. Science of Kundalini Kundalini when awakened puts you in touch with five principles of the universe which are: 1- Kundalini 2- Mind 3- Life Force 4- Internal Divine Sound (Paradiol sound) 5- Point leading to God. It is very very necessary to know these because it leads you to what you think you are to what you really are (Manhood to Godhood). Whatever can be said about Kundalini is very less. Like Narayan (Residual Power) is sitting on the serpent god and his head has earth which contains forest, mountain, sea, and river, Kundalini is the Serpent God. The serpent is the foundation of the whole world. The same way Kundalini is the foundation of the yogic practices. Kundalini is regarded as feminine power and should be focused as very dear to you. The location is the coccyx. You have to focus on Kundalini Power located at the base of the spine in Mooladhar chakra. Serpent Power is like a coiled serpent. The coiled serpent is encircling the shivlinga. The coiled serpent is shinning and if you awaken this power and rise to the crown chakra you get free from birth and death. You get the ULTIMATE FREEDOM. It is self-effulgent and restless for reaching the crown. It shines like god if awakened by the power of the guru given mantra and enters the Sushumna power which is the center of the spine. Consider this as the power of Lord Vishnu. This is also the root cause of all modes. This generates three modes 1- Tamo – inert 2- Rajo – active 3- Satv – divine/meditative active qualities of nature. It is the cause and life-force in the body. You can experience this power by the power of Pranayama when the breath goes still. Yogis experience this when breath is held for long duration’s involuntarily. Kundalini is all in all in spirituality. It is the Summum Bonum of life. There are many forms of this power. This also has sound vibration and many other forms. It is almost impossible to describe all forms. This indescribable divine form can only be experience by self and cannot be explained. It is residing at the lotus (The Spinal Chakra) at Mooladhar. It has four petals and has four pranas (pranas- can be defined as specific duty of the body). It is the power that fulfills the fulfillment of all pure motives. The text on yoga describes the power of Kundalini in exciting ways. Normally this serpent power (soul power) is dormant (sleeping) at the base of the spine (Mooladhar Chakra). One who knows this power is free and one who doesn’t is bonded. So as long as you don’t experience this power you are in bondage. Yogis are well aware of this power t about through experience and therefore attain freedom. This energy is freedom conferring energy. The energy is described as though it is coiled serpent and is coiled 3.5 times and is sleeping. The 3.5 times represents the four states of awareness- waking, sleeping, dreaming and transcendental. When the Kundalini awakens it straightens to enter the Sushumna. When it enters it goes beyond the fourth state then it is in the Sushumna. All the three worlds sleep when the Kundalini is sleeping and all three worlds are awakened when Kundalini is awakened. Unless the Kundalini is awakened any effort to attain Knowledge of freedom is futile. The Mooladhar chakra located at the base of the spine is in the form of a triangle. When Kundalini is not awakened you are a Being but when it is awakened you are Shiva. Kundalini generates the prana and also the procreative fluids. Bindu is the primordial point and the power. The primordial point gives rise to the primordial sound (OM). Mind starts when the ingoing and outgoing of breath starts. The creation has happened. In the body Mooladhar is called the energy vortex. It fulfills all pure motives. This is the primary power which gives birth to the universe. It is the cause of creation of the universe. To know these intricate matters you have to depend on the grace of the guru. Those who perfectly know the power at the base of the spine is beyond ignorance, he knows the effulgent self. He has fulfilled the purpose of existence. One is released from all bondage by knowing and experiencing this power. If the guru is pleased why doubt liberation. There are different names given in the scriptures such as: Sushumna, Kundalini, Saraswati, Primary power. This is also known as Mahamaya (the great illusion), Mahalakshmi (Because it fulfills all of your desires), Mahadevi (Divine feminine power), Saraswati (Gives you knowledge to tear the veil) and un-manifested primary power. This is the root cause of your existence. The universe is founded on the basis of this power. MahaYoga in Vedas There is no proof needed of these utterances. They are the Ultimate Truth. They are 1- Dharm- Right Living 2- Arth- Right means of livelihood 3- Kaam- Right kind of desires and fulfillment 4- Moksha- Release of all bondages Veda reveals the divine knowledge of these areas. They are words of God and beyond all doubts. They are self-proven. It is the treasury of knowledge of the art of living. The knowledge of self-realization is derived from Vedas. The path of self-realization (Shaktipath, Mahayoga) is based on Vedic principles. Kundalini Shakti is based on Mahayoga. The mind is based on Kundalini. The ephemeral world is based on mind. The mastery of mind is the mastery of life force. If you can command the power you can command the three worlds. Without awakening the Kundalini there is no way to be an adept in Bhakti, Yoga or Gyan. You should expand the power of soul. Without Deeksha There is no realized knowledge To awaken this subtle power of Kundalini there is the need of Guru. Therefore all scriptures indicate the need of Guru (Master). The self effort does not give result as fast as the effort after having the Guru. The development in all areas of life is only possible when you have the grace of the Guru. One has to have implicit faith in the guru and remain joyful. This state leads to fearlessness and a state of beyond all doubts. Just as a medical doctor for a person who is ill. When he has a doctor he is free from the fear of death. Similarly with Guru on the path of self-realization one achieves liberation. Without having initiation from a guru one cannot have any success in activities like – repetition of mantra, austerities, self-knowledge, meditation, practice of yoga, devotion, activities of world, selfless activities. Without Deeksha right way of living is not possible. Therefore, the necessity of Deeksha in any success spiritually or worldly. One has to go to a Guru for purpose of initiation. Without Deeksha neither activities are fulfilled nor liberation possible. Make the best possible efforts to meet the guru and get initiation. The necessity of Deeksha for awakening the Kundalini Since the serpent power is not awake from time immemorial the Guru is needed to awaken the Kundalini. The real joy is not at all possible without a spiritual initiation. The best of spiritual effort such as repetition of mantra, austerities, self-knowledge, meditation, practice of yoga, devotion, activities of world, selfless activities are fruitless without awakening the Kundalini. The real joy has nothing to do with the imagined or initiated joy by any conscious activity. The energy which is responsible for real freedom and joy is asleep. To awaken it Deeksha is the only way. There will be a balance in life in all activities as a result of Deeksha. There will be a self-soul satisfaction as a result of the impressions of good deeds of past life. It will be quite evident after Deeksha. The same very world will appear joyful after Deeksha. You think that the world is a bed of thorns and emit negativity. You say that the world is a jail and is full of misery and are fearful. The world is not a bed of thorns but a bed of roses for the awakened person. It is the effect of the awakening of the energy. In the world we are suppose to experience pleasure and pain. For the uninitiated and unwise the world is nest of trouble and full of misery but for the awakened it is the play of the lord. For the man of self-realization the world reveals itself as divine. For the blind everything is full of darkness and for the one blessed everything is full of light. If there were no world there can be no human birth possible. If there is no world there is no question of self-knowledge as well. It is this very world that makes you experience the divine knowledge. As long as Kundalini is asleep it is impossible to even get a minute success in any effort such as repetition of mantra, austerities, self-knowledge, meditation, practice of yoga, devotion, activities of world, selfless activities. Due of good deeds of previous life resulting in grace of Guru everything you do bears fruits. Therefore Guru’s grace is essential. This very world that appears as a prison becomes a free field of joy. The awakening of Kundalini is the panacea of all ills. This is the master medicine. Healthy person has a healthy mind and body. The illusion of pleasure and pain will be unveiled because of the ancient disease. This ancient disease is nothing but the sleeping Kundalini. There the need to awaken it and go beyond the veils of Maya or illusion. There will be perpetual joy. Spiritual Sadhana Having doubts or questions on Kriya Yoga ?
